I needed to get a few things from Super Hmart, a big Korean grocery store chain around here, and took Katy with me as she likes to get her Pocky Stick fix and see what else there is to try. We were looking through produce and I saw they had some cut-up pieces of jackfruit. A jackfruit is an Asian fruit that could easily be mistaken for a weapon. The Asian grocery stores all have the whole ones but I’d never seen cut-up chunks so we thought we’d try one. They’re very common in Singapore but I’d never tried one.
So Katy had a sniff of it, it has a little bit of smell but not nearly as strong as durian.
I tried some, too. Our verdict is that it doesn’t really have much taste.
Jackfruit is called the vegetarian’s meat because you can use it as a meat substitute. One recipe is to take canned jackfruit, drain and rinse and put in a crockpot for a few hours. Shred and add barbecue sauce and it’s supposed to taste just like barbecued pulled pork. I keep thinking I should try that but haven’t gotten around to it.
