Today is Katy’s 13th birthday and what a day it’s been! Her middle school had its big winter concert tonight. It includes the sixth, seventh and eighth grade choruses and the seventh and eighth grade bands and orchestras. The only way they can accommodate all the families is to have two concerts. She had to be there at 5:15. She got home at 4:30, changed clothes, had a snack and we left. Heath and I went to the 6 p.m. concert (they assign when to go to even out the audiences) then we came home and then picked her up at 8:45. We came home, had cake and presents and now it’s 9:45 and she’s doing homework.
Usually I buy a bakery cake but this year I decided to make the family chocolate cake recipe. It’s the same cake I had for nearly every one of my birthdays. Since she’s having a party with cake on Saturday I decided we didn’t need a full cake. I made two small cakes and took one to a neighbor. I found out this recipe needs to be made in a full-sized cake pan. In the smaller cake, it didn’t have space to spread out, I guess, and rose too much in the middle. This cake is made for taste, not for looks!

It was a busy day and rushed evening but she had a good day at school and a great time at the concerts.
