A fun send-off

Katy’s good friend Nadia is moving. She’s not going far, just to the next county, but since the kids are so busy they really only see each other at school, that’s far enough. Katy and her friends Catherine and Elizabeth thought it would be nice to have a little going-away party. So guess who got to clean house and plan the refreshments? There’s a group of seven girls who hang out together so that was the guest list. Nadia knew she was coming over to play with Katy, Catherine and Elizabeth, but she didn’t know about the party or the other girls. She started to get a little suspicious when Katy starting grilling her about her favorite kind of cake. Katy also mentioned that Nadia likes purple, so we went with that.

Everyone but Nadia got there early to be ready to yell surprise. D-Day went off with less planning. Finally I just told everyone to go in the kitchen. An SUV was headed toward our driveway and I asked Katy what color Nadia’s SUV was. She immediately hollered “Nadia’s here” and set off a mad scramble. I got them all calmed down “I never said she was here” but by that time Heath figured out it was here. So the plan was for me to tell Nadia Katy was in the kitchen. Well, Nadia’s little sister, Ashley, managed to get into the kitchen first. The girls all hollered “SURPRISE” and made Ashley cry. Nadia was in the living room, still, trying to figure out what was going on. She went in the kitchen and saw the gaggle of girls. She decided she’d go back to the front door and they’d try it again.

They all finally quit screaming and jumping around long enough to have cake and punch and for Nadia to open some gifts.

This party was a whole lot easier than her birthday parties when she was little. We had eight five-and-six-year-olds for a birthday party and it seemed awfully crowded. This wasn’t too bad. The girls went outside and squealed for 30 minutes then came back in and went into Katy’s room and squealed for another 30 minutes. Then they got really quiet. They were watching YouTube videos on Katy’s iPad.

Nadia still has one more week before she moves and with email and Facetime and the telephone, I’m sure they’ll stay in touch. But it’s nice to have everyone together one last time.
